Embracing the Great Commission with Passion, Intentionality, and Love

As disciples of Christ, we are called not only to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind but also to actively engage the world around us. In this blog post, we will explore what it means to engage the world as a disciple and how we can fulfill the Great Commission with authenticity, empowerment, and intentionality.

Embracing the Great Commission

The Great Commission, as stated in Matthew 28:19-20, is a divine mandate given by Jesus Himself. It is an invitation and a responsibility for every disciple to actively participate in God’s mission of making disciples of all nations. Embracing the Great Commission involves aligning our hearts and actions with the purpose of advancing God’s Kingdom on earth.

To fully embrace the Great Commission, we need to embrace its vision. This vision is rooted in God’s heart for the lost, the broken, and the unreached. It is a vision of seeing lives transformed, communities impacted, and nations reached with the life-giving message of the Gospel. As disciples, we align our desires, prayers, and actions with this vision, believing that God’s love and grace can change the world.

Central to the Great Commission is the call to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. We are called to proclaim His love, grace, forgiveness, and salvation to a world in need. Embracing the Great Commission means becoming intentional about sharing our faith, engaging in conversations about Jesus, and demonstrating His love through our actions. We seek opportunities to sow seeds of the Gospel and trust God to bring forth a harvest.

Another aspect of embracing the Great Commission is the call to make disciples. We are not simply called to lead people to Christ but to guide and mentor them in their journey of faith. Discipleship involves investing time, energy, and resources into the lives of others, equipping them to grow in their relationship with God, teaching them to obey His commands, and encouraging them to go and make disciples themselves. It is a continuous cycle of multiplication, with each disciple becoming a disciple-maker.

The Great Commission extends beyond our immediate surroundings. It invites us to go beyond our comfort zones and reach out to people from every nation, culture, and background. Embracing the Great Commission means having a global perspective, supporting and engaging in missions, and actively participating in efforts to reach the unreached and marginalized with the message of hope. Whether it’s through short-term missions, supporting missionaries, or praying for the nations, we actively engage in fulfilling the global aspect of the Great Commission.

In embracing the Great Commission, we acknowledge our dependence on the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who empowers and equips us for the task at hand. We seek His guidance, wisdom, and empowerment as we step out in faith to fulfill the Great Commission. We rely on His leading, His gifts, and His anointing to effectively share the Gospel and make disciples.

Authenticity in Engagement

Authenticity in engagement is a key principle that should underpin our interactions as disciples of Christ. It goes beyond mere surface-level communication and demands a genuine and transparent approach.

To engage authentically means to bring our true selves to the table – our strengths, weaknesses, struggles, and victories. It requires us to be vulnerable, open, and honest with others. When we engage authentically, we create a safe space for meaningful connections to form.

Authenticity in engagement involves listening with empathy, showing genuine interest in others, and valuing their perspectives. It means being willing to admit when we don’t have all the answers and seeking understanding rather than trying to impress or persuade.

As disciples, our authenticity should be grounded in our identity in Christ. We embrace the truth of God’s love and grace in our lives and extend that same love and grace to others. Our words and actions should reflect the transforming power of the Gospel.

When we engage authentically, we build trust, foster deeper connections, and create a space for true transformation to take place. Authentic engagement allows us to be vessels through which God’s love and truth can flow, impacting lives and drawing others closer to Him. Let us strive to engage authentically, reflecting the authenticity of our Savior and being a beacon of light in a world hungry for genuine connections.

Here are some verses to support authentic engagement:

  • Proverbs 27:19 (NIV): “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” Authentic engagement involves reflecting our true heart and character in our interactions with others.
  • 1 Peter 1:22 (NIV): “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.” Authentic engagement is rooted in sincere love and genuine care for others.
  • Ephesians 4:15 (NIV): “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Authentic engagement involves speaking truth with love, being honest and transparent while maintaining a spirit of love and grace.
  • Romans 12:9 (NIV): “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Authentic engagement calls for genuine love that abhors what is evil and clings to what is good.

Empowering Others

Empowering others is a powerful aspect of discipleship that unleashes their full potential and encourages them to walk in their God-given purpose. As disciples, we have the privilege and responsibility to equip and empower those around us, helping them grow in their faith and impact the world.

Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.

John C. Maxwell

When we empower others, we come alongside them as encouragers, mentors, and guides. We provide them with the tools, resources, and knowledge they need to navigate their own discipleship journey and become effective disciple-makers themselves.

By empowering others, we create a ripple effect of transformation. As they grow in their love for God and others, they, in turn, empower and disciple others, creating a multiplying impact in the Kingdom of God. It is a beautiful cycle of growth and multiplication.

Leading with Love

Leading with love is at the heart of discipleship. It means embracing the selfless and sacrificial love that Christ demonstrated for us. As 1 Corinthians 16:14 says, “Let all that you do be done in love.” When we lead with love, we prioritize compassion, kindness, and understanding in our interactions, following the command of Jesus in John 13:34-35 to love one another. We extend grace and forgiveness, even when it’s difficult, just as Ephesians 4:32 reminds us to “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Leading with love creates an atmosphere of acceptance, unity, and growth, fulfilling the call to “above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). It is through love that we reflect God’s character and draw others closer to Him. Let love be the guiding force in all that we do as disciples, for it has the power to transform lives and change the world.

In Summary

Engaging the world as a disciple is not an option but a calling. It requires us to step out of our comfort zones, embrace diversity, empower others, and respond to the needs of those around us. As we authentically, intentionally, and lovingly engage the world, we become ambassadors of Christ, fulfilling the Great Commission and advancing His Kingdom. Let us embark on this transformative journey, equipping ourselves with the tools and resources to engage the world as disciples who wholeheartedly embrace the Great Commandment and passionately fulfill the Great Commission.
